After the confirmation of the generation of the Compton backscattered X-rays with Nd:YAG laser and 150 MeV electron beam pulses at last fiscal year, we make some improvements for increase the generated X-ray flux. As one of them, we are developing the laser pulse compression with the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to obtain a high peak intensity of the Nd:YAG laser. As the SBS medium, we adopt a liquid fluorocarbon which has well achievements for the pulse compression at ILE at Osaka University. We aim the compressed pulse duration to be less than 1 ns. On this meeting we show the present status of the SBS pulse compression system for the Compton backscattering. In addition, we present the recent result of the Compton backscattering experiment without the laser compression technique.

In-NMR study of CeIrIn$$_5$$

no journal, ,

T-dependence and anisotropy of Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation time T1 of In-NMR have been determined in heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn$$_5$$. Knight shift and T1 show a strong anisotropy. Knight shift versus static susceptibility plot is non-linear at low temperatures, indicating that the hyperfine coupling depends on temperature. The origin of hyperfine interaction and anisotropy of spin fluctuations will be discussed.

We have developed a new method to measure lifetime of long-lived isomers populated through the $$beta$$ decay, using a total absorption detector. Using this method, we have determined lifetime of the K isomers in $$^{162}$$Gd and $$^{165}$$Gd for the first time. The short-lived neutron-rich nuclei $$^{162}$$Eu and $$^{165}$$Eu were produced and mass-separated by the on-line isotope separator (ISOL) at JAEA tandem accelerator facility. Beta- and $$gamma$$ rays emitted by the $$beta$$ decay of $$^{162,165}$$Eu were total-absorbed by the detector, and all the events were recorded with time stamps. This method enabled us to determine lifetime of the isomers with more than 100-$$mu$$s lifetime.

Laser-driven proton beam irradiation on in-vitro human cancer cells

In this work, we demonstrate the irradiation effect of laser accelerated protons induced on human lung cancer cells. In-vitro A549 cells are irradiated with a proton dose of 20 Gy, resulting in a distinct formation of $$gamma$$-H2AX foci as an indicator of DNA double-strand breaks. This is the first result showing that laser-driven ion beams can generate a lethal effect on cancer cells.

Dissociative ionization dynamics of ethanol in intense laser fields by photoelectron-photoion coincidence momentum imaging

Hosaka, Koichi; Itakura, Ryuji; Yokoyama, Keiichi; Yamanouchi, Kaoru*; Yokoyama, Atsushi

no journal, ,

In intense laser fields, molecules are decomposed into fragments through a number of competing dissociative ionization pathways. We investigate the dissociative ionization dynamics of ethanol in intense laser fields with photoelectron-photoion coincidence momentum imaging. The channel-specific photoelectron spectra reveal the electronic states prepared just after ionization, depending both on the decomposition pathways and on the temporal profile of laser pulses.

Field-induced incommensurate order in the distorted diamond chain

Sakai, Toru; Tonegawa, Takashi*; Okamoto, Kiyomi*

no journal, ,

The S=1/2 distorted diamond chain is investigated by the density matrix renormalization group and the numerical exact diagonalization. We found that an incommensurate long-range order is induced by the external magnetic field above the 1/3 magnetization plateau. We using this result theoretically explain the field induced incommensurate order observed in the azurite.
